BEM વિદ્યાર્થીઓને સોલર સાયકલ ભેગા કરવાનું શીખવીને પૃથ્વી દિવસ 2024ની ઉજવણી કરે છે

22મી એપ્રિલ 2024ના રોજ વિવિધ સમુદાયો દ્વારા પૃથ્વી દિવસની અસંખ્ય રીતે ઉજવણી કરવામાં આવે છે. જો કે, આણંદ સ્થિત પબ્લિક લિમિટેડ કંપની, બરોડા ઇલેક્ટ્રિક મીટર લિમિટેડ (BEM) માટે, પૃથ્વી દિવસની ઉજવણી એક વર્ષ લાંબી ઘટના છે. બે વર્ષ પહેલા વિશ્વભરમાં સૌપ્રથમ સૌર સાયકલ લોન્ચ કરનાર કંપની ખુશ છે કે ભારત જે અત્યાર સુધી યુએસ (કાર) મોડલનું અનુયાયી હતું તે હવે નેધરલેન્ડ (સાયકલ) મોડલને અનુસરવા માર્ગ બદલી રહ્યું છે.

ભારતીય ઉપભોક્તા ગ્રીનહાઉસ ગેસ (GHG) ઉત્સર્જન ઘટાડીને અને પર્યાવરણને બચાવીને મધર અર્થનું રક્ષણ કરવાની ભયાવહ જરૂરિયાત વિશે વધુ જાગૃત બની રહ્યા છે. તેઓ તેમની જીવનશૈલીમાં સુધારો કરવા લાગ્યા છે. ભારતમાં જે કારને એક સમયે સ્ટેટસ સિમ્બોલ માનવામાં આવતી હતી તે હવે નવી પેઢી દ્વારા માનવામાં આવતી નથી. ટૂંકા અંતર માટે તેઓ તેમના ફોર વ્હીલર ઘરે રાખવાનું પસંદ કરે છે અને તેના બદલે ટુ વ્હીલર ચલાવે છે.

BEM પર, અમે માનીએ છીએ કે 8 કિલોમીટરથી ઓછા અંતરની સફર માટે સાયકલ એ વ્યક્તિગત પરિવહનનું શ્રેષ્ઠ માધ્યમ છે. જો કે, ભારતના ઘણા ભાગોમાં, આબોહવાની સ્થિતિ કઠોર બની રહી છે, ખાસ કરીને ઉનાળામાં. તાપમાન 40 ડિગ્રી સેલ્સિયસથી ઉપર વધે છે. આવી કઠોર પરિસ્થિતિઓમાં, સૌર સાયકલ આદર્શ વાહન બની જાય છે - વિવિધ પેડલ સહાયક મોડ્સ સવારને વધુ ઠંડી સવારીનો અનુભવ કરવાની મંજૂરી આપે છે. ICE (ઇન્ટરનલ કમ્બ્યુઝન) એન્જિન અથવા અન્ય ઇલેક્ટ્રિક વાહનોથી વિપરીત, 250W રેટિંગની સૌર સાયકલ મોટર રાઇડ દરમિયાન ખૂબ ઓછી ગરમી ઉત્પન્ન કરે છે. સૌથી અગત્યનું, ઇલેક્ટ્રિક રિચાર્જ સ્ટેશનો પર સમય બગાડવાની જરૂર નથી કારણ કે સૌર સાયકલ તેની બેટરીને ચાર્જ કરવા માટે તેના પોતાના નવીનીકરણીય ઉર્જા ઉત્પન્ન કરતા સ્ત્રોતને વહન કરે છે. રસપ્રદ વાત એ છે કે સૌર સાયકલ એકમાત્ર એવા વાહનો છે જે ગતિમાં હોય ત્યારે ઊર્જા ઉત્પન્ન કરવામાં સક્ષમ છે.

સાયકલ સવારી પણ વધુ સુરક્ષિત બની રહી છે. સમગ્ર વિશ્વમાં, પરિવહન સત્તાવાળાઓએ અલગ સાયકલ લેન બનાવવાનું શરૂ કર્યું છે. વધુમાં, ટ્રામ, મેટ્રો ટ્રેન અને લાંબા અંતરની ટ્રેનોમાં પણ ફેરફાર કરવામાં આવી રહ્યા છે જેથી મુસાફરો તેમની સાયકલ સાથે લઈ જઈ શકે. સાયકલ ઝડપથી ભવિષ્યના વ્યક્તિગત ગતિશીલતા વાહનો બની રહી છે. સાયકલ પણ એકમાત્ર એવી છે કે જેની અલગ લેન હોય છે.

સૌર સાયકલ ઊર્જાના નવીનીકરણીય સ્ત્રોતનો ઉપયોગ કરે છે. સૂર્યની ઉર્જા ખતમ નહીં થાય. તે ઉર્જા ઉત્પન્ન કરવાની સ્વચ્છ રીત પણ છે કારણ કે તે ગ્રીનહાઉસ વાયુઓ ઉત્પન્ન કરતી નથી જે આબોહવા પરિવર્તનને વધુ ખરાબ બનાવે છે. જ્યારે સોલાર પેનલ કાર્યરત હોય ત્યારે તે હવા, પાણી અથવા અવાજનું પ્રદૂષણ પણ ઉત્પન્ન કરતું નથી. કિંમતી જમીન પર કબજો કરતા સૌર ખેતરોથી વિપરીત (જેનો ઉપયોગ વન્યજીવોના નિવાસસ્થાન અથવા ખેતરો દ્વારા થઈ શકે છે), સૌર સાયકલ પર લગાવવામાં આવેલી સોલાર પેનલની ફૂટપ્રિન્ટ નજીવી રીતે નાની હોય છે. જો કે સૌર પેનલ માત્ર 30 ટકા કાર્યક્ષમ માનવામાં આવે છે, નાના ફૂટપ્રિન્ટ દરરોજ 150 વોટની ઉર્જાનો ઉપયોગ કરે છે (ઓછી કાર્યક્ષમતા જનરેશન દ્વારા), આકર્ષક, સાર્થક અને 8 કિમીની ત્રિજ્યામાંના ગંતવ્યની સફર માટે યોગ્ય.

તમારી કારને તમારા ગેરેજમાં રાખીને અને તેના બદલે કામ કરવા માટે સોલાર સાયકલ ચલાવીને, તમે દર વર્ષે 369 લિટર ડીઝલ ઇંધણ ઓછું બાળી શકશો અને આ રીતે 1 ટન ગ્રીનહાઉસ વાયુઓ બચાવી શકશો. સંભવતઃ, આ વર્ષનો પૃથ્વી દિવસનો આ શ્રેષ્ઠ રિઝોલ્યુશન છે. સોલાર સાયકલની માંગમાં વધારાની ધારણા સાથે BEM તેની સૌર સાયકલની ઉત્પાદન ક્ષમતા વધારવા માટે તૈયારી કરી રહી છે.

ક્લાઈમેટ ચેન્જ એ એક પડકાર છે અને BEM માને છે કે જ્યાં સુધી જનભાગીદારી ન હોય ત્યાં સુધી તે હાંસલ કરવું મુશ્કેલ છે. તેથી, પૃથ્વી દિવસ 2024 પર તેના સંકલ્પના ભાગરૂપે, BEM નવી પેઢીને સૌર સાયકલ કેવી રીતે એસેમ્બલ કરવી તે શીખવવાની અને મફત તાલીમ આપવાની યોજના ધરાવે છે. તેણે ITI અને ઉચ્ચતર માધ્યમિક શાળાઓના વિદ્યાર્થીઓને આમંત્રિત કર્યા છે અને તેઓને બેચમાં મફત શિક્ષણ આપી રહ્યું છે. અમે જોયું છે કે કોવિડ પછી, વિદ્યાર્થીઓ સુસ્ત બની ગયા છે અને રમતો અને અન્ય પ્રવૃત્તિઓમાં ભાગ લેવામાં નિષ્ફળ ગયા છે. BEM ખાતે, અમે માનીએ છીએ કે સૌર સાયકલની એસેમ્બલી તેમને તંદુરસ્ત જીવનશૈલીનો ભાગ બનવા અને સાથે સાથે પર્યાવરણ બચાવવા માટે પ્રોત્સાહિત કરશે.

BEM CELEBRATES EARTH DAY 2024 BY TEACHING STUDENTS TO ASSEMBLE SOLAR BICYCLES 

Earth Day is celebrated in numerous ways by different communities on 22nd April 2024. However, for Baroda Electric Meters Ltd (BEM), a Anand based Public Limited Company, Earth Day celebration is a year long event. The company that had launched the first solar bicycle world-wide two years back is happy that India, which was so far a follower of the US (car) model, is now changing course to follow the Netherlands (bicycle) model. 

Indian consumers are becoming more aware about the desperate need to protect Mother Earth by reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and saving the environment. They are beginning to make amends to their lifestyle. Cars that were once considered to be a status symbol in India, is no longer considered so by the new generation. For short distances they prefer to keep their four wheelers at home and ride a two wheeler instead. 

At BEM, we believe that bicycles are the best mode of personal transport for trip distance less than 8 kms. However, in many parts of India, the climatic conditions are getting harsh, particularly in the summer. Temperatures soar above 40 degrees C. Under such harsh conditions, a solar bicycle becomes the ideal vehicle - the various pedal assist modes allow the rider to have a much cooler riding experience. Unlike vehicles with ICE (Internal Combusion) engines or other Electric vehicles, a solar bicycle motor of 250W rating generates very little heat during the ride. Most importantly, there is no need to waste time at electric recharge stations since a solar bicycle carries its own renewable energy generating source to charge its battery. Interestingly solar bicycles are the only vehicles that are capable of generating energy while in motion. 

Bicycle riding is also becoming more safer. All over the world, the transport authorities have begun constructing separate bicycle lanes. Moreover, trams, metro trains and long distance trains are also getting modified to allow passengers to carry their bicycle with them. Bicycles are fast becoming the personal mobility vehicles of the future. 

Solar bicycles use renewable source of energy. The energy from the Sun will not run out. It is also a clean way of generating energy since it does not produce greenhouse gases which make the climate change worse. It also does not produce air, water or noise pollution when the solar panel is operating. Unlike solar farms that occupy precious land (that could be used by wildlife habitat or farms), the footprint of the solar panel mounted on a solar bicycle is negligibly small. Though  a solar panel is considered to be only 30 percent efficient, it's small footprint makes the 150 Watts of energy harnessed daily, attractive, worthwhile and suitable for a trip to a destination within 8 km radius.  

By keeping your car in your garage and riding a solar bicycle to work instead, you would be able to burn 369 litres of diesel fuel less each year, and thus save 1 tonne of greenhouse gases. Probably, this the best Earth Day resolution one can take this year. BEM is gearing up to increase its production capacity of solar bicycles anticipating an increase in demand for solar bicycles. 

Climate change is a challenge and BEM believes that unless there is public participation, it is difficult to achieve. So, as part of its resolve on Earth Day 2024, BEM plans to teach and offer free training to the new generation on how to assemble solar bicycles. It has invited students from ITIs and higher secondary schools and is imparting free education to them in batches. We have observed that post covid, the students have become lethargic and fail to participate in games and other activities. At BEM, we believe that assembly of solar bicycles would encourage them to become part of a healthy lifestyle and simultaneously protect the environment.  

To what extent are you willing to go in order to protect the environment?

• Would you buy a new BS6 or EURO6 vehicle with ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) ? 

  • Under the BS6 norm, the limit of pollution has been reduced - while the norm for Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) is reduced to 60mg/km, the Pariculate Matter (PM) has been restricted to 4.5mg/km (Actually the credit goes more to the BS6 fuel that contains less sulphur and NOx). Nevertheless internal combustion engines (ICE) do pollute, and more significantly cause global warming and deplete the planet of its scarce oil resources.  

• Would you buy a new Electric Car instead?

  • Our article on Solar Bicycles vs. EVs  shows how you would be continuing to use fossil fuel to charge your Electric Vehicle (EV), and thus would be still responsible for pollution (in sharp contrast to the claims made by GEDA).
