The BEM® Savitré™ Vibe 26" Solar Assist Bicycle looks majestic and tall - it stands out amongst other vehicles on the road. This 26" bike is aesthetically more appealing compared to the smaller diameter (20 or 24") wheel bicycles. The solar panel (with its longer dimension = 25") looks relatively small in comparison to the large - 26" diameter wheel. Hence the solar panel looks more elegant when mounted on the 26" solar assist bicycle.
With the change to a smaller diameter freewheel and with an increase in wheel diameter to 26" in the design of solar assist bicycles, one can now travel at a speed of 25 km/hour in the solar (pedal) assist mode, with very little battery discharge! Up from the earlier 18 km/hour! You don't need to go any further up, as 25 km/hour is the speed limit for bicycle trails and bicycle lanes! It is, thus, possible to achieve a higher speed of 25km/hour with a bigger diameter (26") wheel without multi speed gears.
The five solar (pedal) assist levels in a 26 inch solar assist bicycle offer better control of the ratio of solar energy to metabolic energy at different speeds! To ride at 25 km/hour, all you need to do is shift up to Solar Assist Level 5! Assuming that you are pedaling on a bright sunny day, it is the most wonderful combination of human calories and solar Watts.
The calories burned by the rider to deliver the metabolic energy in the Solar Assisted Pedaling mode @ 25 km/hour goes down from 320 kcal/hour to 200 kcal/hour. The pedaling effort does not only reduce considerably, but also becomes steady or flattens out across different slopes/ inclinations. Of course this is only when we wish to not drain the battery. One is always free to choose to reduce metabolic energy input even further by substituting it with solar energy and draining the battery even more; or at the extreme end, choose throttle mode to bring the calorie (metabolic energy) consumption down to zero!

Wheel diameter = 26" = 66.04 cm. Hence, the wheel circumference = πD = 3.14 x 26 = 81.6814" = 207.47 cm = 2.0747m.
At speed of 25 km/ hour = 0.41666 km/minute, or = 416.667 m/min, the speed of rotation of the wheels can be calculated as follows:
Wheel rotation speed = 416.66 / 2.0747 = 200.829 RPM (revolutions/min) =3.347revolutions/sec.
The gear ratio = 16 teeth (Freewheel sprocket) : 45 teeth (Chain ring / Chain wheel).
Hence the speed of the Chain ring/Pedals = (16/45) x 200.829 = 71.41 RPM (revolutions/min) = 1.19 revolutions/sec. This speed is quite comfortable and achieved with less effort in the solar assist pedaling mode.

The BEM® सवित्रे™ Savitré Vibe - Solar bicycle is different from all other electric vehicles with respect to its charging needs. The Solar bicycle does not need to be plugged into an electric socket for charging! No need to hunt for an electric socket at your destination or place of work. Simply park the bicycle with the solar panel facing the sun for approximately 4 hours to recharge the battery of the e-bicycle after 25 kms of daily travel.
Harness solar energy even while travelling. During day travel, the DC motor of the Solar bicycle usually draws only 80% to 85% of the total current requirement from the Li-ion battery while the Solar panel supplies the rest (15% to 20%). Reduced burden on the battery means longer life of the battery. The slower charging process over 6 hours under the sun is also recommended to enhance the battery life. (In sharp contrast, fast charging from electric outlets reduces battery life).

To begin your ride in the Solar (Pedal) Assist mode, step on the pedal. After acquiring the desired speed, press the '+' button to increase the level of Pedal Assist that suits you. To lower down the pedal assist level press on the '-' button.
To begin your ride in the Throttle mode, simply twist the throttle handle in an anti-clockwise direction. Keep the throttle position steady for about 10 seconds to enter the cruise mode - to cruise at a steady constant speed. The LCD Panel will display 'P' to confirm entry into 'cruise mode'. To exit cruise mode, simply rotate the pedals forward, or apply any of the two brakes or twist the throttle once again.

A 5 speed PAS (Pedal Assist) control that gives the rider an ability to choose the level of assistance that is needed from the battery while pedaling.
Cruise Control: After twisting / rotating the throttle handle by a fixed degree and by maintaining a steady speed for a time duration greater than 5 seconds, the motor controller would enter the 'Cruise Control' mode (indicated accordingly by a symbol 'P' on the LCD Panel). Thereafter, the rider is free to release the throttle handle while the motor controller takes over the function of maintaining the set speed or 'cruise control mode'. The motor controller would exit the cruise control mode when any of the following conditions get satisfied: (a) Any of the brake levers are pressed, or (b) The Throttle handle is again rotated, or (c) The Pedals are rotated.
A Strip LED Tail Parking Light mounted on rear for safety. Tail Parking light goes ON when switch is turned ON, regardless of whether day / night, for safe riding in all weather conditions.

Throttle Mode: Switch ON the Power by turning the key clockwise. Gently rotate the throttle handle anticlockwise to accelerate. Retain the position of handle rotation to cruise at the desired speed. Let go off the handle to allow it to get back to the original (zero) position to cut off battery supply to the motor and free wheel - cycle continues to move due to inertia. With a 8.7Ah Battery one can cover a distance of 20 to 25 km in this mode
Pedal Assist Mode (PAS): Switch ON the Power by turning the key clockwise. Do not use the Throttle handle. Instead press your foot on the pedal. The Pedal Assist Sensor (PAS) will detect your pedalling speed and assist manual power with battery power. The PAS mode allows you to travel the same distance with less manual effort. Battery gets drained less in the PAS mode in comparison to the Throttle mode, thereby enabling one to cover larger distances. With a 8.7Ah Battery one can cover a distance of 30 to 35 km in this mode.
Manual Pedal Mode: Switch OFF the Power by turning the key anti-clockwise. This would disable both PAS and Throttle modes. The bicycle gets transformed back to a human powered, pedal driven one. This mode is particularly useful to safely return back home, when you run out of battery power. The 8.7Ah Battery does not get drained in the manual pedal mode.
Tip: Apply brakes only when needed. Applying brakes unnecessarily wastes energy.

Low Loss / High Efficiency Charging Process: When you charge the battery from a 230 Volt ac electric mains, an AC to DC conversion takes place which is inefficient. This means high temperature - low reliability operation, or requirement for forced cooling or bigger heat sink for the charger. Many AC to DC chargers are also seen to inject harmful harmonics into the AC system. Unlike this, the Solar to Battery charge process is DC to DC which is more efficient, which means that the charger can be smaller in size, more reliable, no need for cooling fans, less noise, etc.
Optimum Charging Process: Unlike other chargers, the solar charger is microcontroller based and intelligent. The ARM controller chooses an optimum - Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) point for the DC to DC (Solar to Battery) conversion for efficient charging with a smaller solar panel that can be carried on a bicycle.
